The result was a compelling visual campaign that positioned the Trail as a destination for both taste and sustainability.

BC Farmers Market Themed Video Case Study

How hidden content uncovered a long-standing visitor engagement opportunity for Travel Drumheller. 

Firmly at the core of Alberta’s Canadian Badlands, Drumheller is known internationally for its prehistoric history. For the majority of folks, that history manifests itself as the Royal Tyrrell Museum — a massively acclaimed destination that draws dinosaur enthusiast (AKA: pretty much everyone) from across the globe.

While Royal Tyrrell rightfully shines as a major travel destination, the adjacent town of Drumheller naturally sees a percentage of that traffic by sheer proximity. But 

 knew they could drive even more traffic by providing a richer, more interactive travel experience that truly made the most of the town’s quirky culture, unique history, and distinct geography.


Drumheller has long stood as a tourism hotspot in Alberta. But with an attraction as globally recognized as the Royal Tyrrell Museum, any destination would face the issue of tourists making the trip to see the museum, only to promptly leave the region directly afterwards. 

A lack of geographical dispersion of tourist traffic outwards from the Royal Tyrrell Museum meant that local cafes, retail shops, and attractions in Drumheller’s core weren’t seeing economic benefit of the high volumes of traffic generated by the museum. 

The incentive or outright roadmap for exploring outwards from the Royal Tyrrell Museum into Drumheller simply did not exist at the scale it should. 

But, thankfully, Drumheller possessed the 

 thing to thread together an experience that would do exactly that: delightfully retro and locally cherished concrete dinosaurs.

Blazing the Dino Trail with Hidden Content

These statues had the potential to be more than mere set pieces—they could become the connective tissue between Drumheller’s heritage and its economic future.

For decades, around 150 concrete statues of dinosaurs have been scattered across Drumheller. Charming, retro, and bristling with character, they’ve been a longstanding point of interest and hometown quirky-pride for decades. There had been attempts at creating a memorable experience involving these statues in the past, but Travel Drumheller knew a more interactive and engaging experience was waiting to be found… 

Travel Drumheller teamed up with Tourismo to transform this latent potential into a town-wide interactive experience. The centrepiece was a soon to be released, self-guided itinerary — The Dino Trail — guiding visitors on a statue to statue journey via the Travel Drumheller website. 

But while a point-to-point itinerary would, in itself, be a significant upgrade, Travel Drumheller’s vision was to create a digital scavenger hunt where visitors could actually 

 with each dinosaur. To do this, they created dedicated QR codes to place at each dinosaur. When a visitor scans any of those codes, they’ll unlock unique animated content — a short animated video with a narrated story that tells the story of that specific dinosaur. 

This new structure transformed the statues into a cohesive, interactive, and rewarding journey around Drumheller. Of course, the trail’s vision is not 

 to connect a series of dinosaur statues — it is, critically, to drive more revenue across Drumheller’s many small businesses in the downtown core. 

On one hand, the very nature of the trail does exactly that. By increasing foot traffic in the downtown core, that very foot traffic became more likely to visit adjacent small businesses. But in order to budge visitors towards stand-out businesses in the community, the online trail features restaurants, shops and activities beside the Dinos that are perfect for a family lunch, afternoon break or souvenir trip.

The Dino Trail’s “in the moment” interactivity came together quickly — but Travel Drumheller wanted to offer visitors with a 

 that they could cherish after the trip's end. While a competition points-based system was briefly discussed, Travel Drumheller instead opted to continue with the “hidden content” theme (but, this time, in physical form). 

If any visitor scans all twelve QR codes across Drumheller, they’ll get invited to pick up a Dino Trail themed colouring book from the Travel Drumheller visitor centre. Easy to execute, it’s a physical rewards program that further incentivizes exploration — and prompts post-trip advocacy and word of mouth. 

The best part? Creating and executing The Dino Trail took way less time than expected. Building a 

 took the Travel Drumheller team took only a few hours, while developing interactive QR codes and a physical rewards program came together in just a few weeks. 

Charming, engaging, and purpose-built to encourage geographic dispersion, The Dino Trail combined quick-to-execute visitor engagement tactics to raise awareness and drive traffic to Drumheller’s bustling downtown core in a radically new way.

While select components of The Dino Trail were simple to execute solely from the Tourismo platform, Travel Drumheller teamed up with Tourismo’s creative services team to make the experience a truly special one. 

Working with Tourismo’s preferred creative collaborators, they took an active role in shaping the creative-side of the experience to reflect the Trail’s broader vision (and the Travel Drumheller brand). The team crafted original animations, authored children’s stories, and designed the coloring book—all elements of the engagement that became both the digital and physical rewards for participation. 

For Travel Drumheller, that was a game-changer. Because, like any destination marketing organization, limited time and resources can make executing even the best plan difficult. Instead, Travel Drumheller were able to simply contribute to the ideation phase, create engagements in the platform, and let Tourismo handle the rest. 

The result is a fully realized visitor engagement campaign that combines a handful of forward-looking marketing tactics proven to drive impact: themed trails, hidden content, and a physical rewards program.

The Dino Trail is a recent but critical campaign in evolving Drumheller’s tourism landscape and destination potential. What were once background curiosities became creative, engaging focal points for engagement, traffic, and revenue. The campaign is a prime example of a destination using what they already have, and further leaning into the elements of their local character to raise awareness and drive impact. The Dino Trail was not just about boosting numbers; it was about deepening connections—to stories, places, businesses, and memories that might have been overlooked. The Alberta Ale Trail partnered with Tourismo to launch the

The Ice Cream Ale Trail Passport

The Alberta Ale Trail partnered with Tourismo to launch a Poster Campaign designed to boost awareness and drive engagement towards the new app at breweries across Alberta. By combining professional design with targeted placement, the campaign put the Ale Trail brand directly in front of craft beer lovers where they gather most. Each poster featured a dynamic QR code, linking visitors and locals to a direct download call-to-action, while providing valuable insights into campaign performance.

The Alberta Ale Trail wanted to strengthen its presence at partnering breweries while encouraging visitors and locals to explore more of the province’s craft beer destinations. The goal was to create eye-catching materials that would not only raise brand visibility but also connect craft beer lovers to the Alberta Ale Trail app.

Tourismo developed a custom poster package tailored to the Alberta Ale Trail brand.
Key elements included:

 – Bold, on-brand creative designed to stand out in busy taprooms and brewery spaces.

 – 200 posters were printed and shipped either directly to breweries or to their destination marketing offices for further distribution.

 – Each poster included a scannable QR code pointing users to the Alberta Ale Trail App page and promoting downloads. This campaign included over 50 unique locations, for both physical and digital posters.

 – From creative planning to shipping logistics, Tourismo handled the entire rollout.

 – QR scan data provided ongoing insights into engagement and reach.

Placed inside breweries to capture audiences at the source, this poster encouraged visitors to download the Alberta Ale Trail app and engage with challenges, contests, and giveaways through a dynamic QR code.

Re:BC partnered with Tourismo to launch a newsletter campaign that highlights regenerative travel, sustainable events, and community stories from across British Columbia. By combining seasonal storytelling with actionable calls to action, the newsletter keeps Re:BC’s audience engaged and informed while driving readers back to their website and events calendar.

Re:BC needed a way to regularly engage their community around regenerative tourism. Their goals were to:

Stay top-of-mind with locals and visitors

Promote sustainable travel practices and upcoming events

Provide a consistent platform to highlight partners and communities

Manage newsletter production without straining internal capacity

Tourismo managed the end-to-end newsletter campaign, ensuring consistent delivery and professional execution.

Visitors earned points by completing challenges and checking in at participating farmers markets, then redeemed them for exclusive merchandise through a branded online store.

The team wanted to increase repeat visits, reward participation in the Farmers Market Trail Passport, and strengthen brand loyalty with meaningful perks, while keeping fulfillment simple across a large regional campaign.

Tourismo built a branded WooCommerce redemption store, integrated with the Farmers Market Trail Passport app. Users earned points in the app by completing challenges and check-ins, and redeemed them online for custom rewards including BC Farmers Market Trail Veggie Socks and West Coast Seeds Insect Beneficial Blend. Automated redemption rules and reporting streamlined the entire experience.

Users access the Rewards Market directly from the app. With one click, they’re taken to the online store where they can browse and redeem rewards.

How gamification helped entice BC Ale Trail Visitors back for a second round.

Few platforms better capture the phrase “right idea at the right time” than the BC Ale Trail.

as the craft beer movement was shifting from niche to mainstream, the BC Ale Trail is the brainchild of the BC Craft Brewers Guild. 

Providing newbies and established brew sommeliers alike an engaging, insider’s itinerary for the absolute best BC beer, the BC Craft Brewers Guild’s vision was to deliver region-changing value for breweries, consumers, and communities alike.
That vision was a prescient one — in just a few years, the BC Ale Trail platform hit a staggering 26,000 users. 

From timing to awareness to an established audience, the BC Ale Trail had all the right ingredients assembled to become one of the all-time greats in the beverage sector. 

But despite those early successes, trouble was brewing…


The BC Ale Trail platform was struggling to re-engage their massive audience 

A simplistic app frustrated users and burdened breweries with upkeep and admin

Audience decay and poor retention was quickly accelerating

As early as 2022, BC Ale Trail saw a problem. Despite establishing a huge audience, re-engaging and retaining audiences proved a big problem. 
Seeking a solution to benefit consumers and breweries alike, the BC Craft Brewers Guild worked with external developers to create a simple BC Ale Trail app. Audiences were awarded points for repeat check-ins that they could redeem for brews, swag, or events — it felt like a no-brainer solution. 

The problem? That “app” was rudimentary to the point of user frustration with limited functionality resulting in massive churn (basically, a glorified spreadsheet). So, not exactly engaging.

Meanwhile, a handful of sneaky brew lovers began gaming the system by“checking in” at multiple breweries by driving by at all hours of the day, and gobbling up points. Incentive to cheat was high; incentive to revisit breweries was unmoved.  

It was bad times for the breweries, too. Since the app wasn’t integrated with the BC Ale Trail platform, breweries were required to manually update key details across two platforms resulting in errors, dated information, and frustration at every level. 
The takeaway? 

With little change in retention and re-engagement, the golden taps of opportunity for the BC Ale Trail were drying up — fast.

Despite hiccups (a lot of them), the BC Ale Trail 

 seeing some traction from the gamification introduced with their initial app. A new app was needed — no question. While that was a critical component, the BC Ale Trail team knew it wouldn't be a silver bullet. 

With a new app live, the BC Ale Trail needed to build on the initial engagement and signal they saw from their previous app. To entice visitors back for a second (and third, and fourth) round, they used Tourismo’s engagement toolkit to create and distribute 

most tried and true brewery event in existence: the pub quiz. 
But one-off quiz nights weren’t going to move the needle — they needed a solution that every brewery along the way could engage with. 

Using the Tourismo platform, the BC Ale Trail team made it easy for breweries to get involved and drive engagement. 

1) The BC Ale Trail team creates weekly pub quizzes directly in the Tourismo platform

2) The BC Ale Trail distributes trivia questions and details to breweries via Tourismo 

3) Breweries embed trivia details on their website, send push notifications, and use provided assets to spread the word on social media

4) Breweries retarget past visitors via push notifications in the BC Ale Trail app.

5) Customers get rewarded points for checking-in during specific times and for every correct answer submitted (and, of course, some really good times).

Simple to organize and distribute, weekly pub quizzes represented a game-changer for the BC Ale Trail platform. Audiences were flowing back to breweries along the trail, millions of points were accrued, and the BC Ale Trail had officially found their second wind.

Making the Case for Another Round | Collaboration + Analytics

Beverage sectors similar to the BC Ale Trail get it: not every brewery thinks of themselves as a driving force for tourism from the get-go. But that buy-in from constituents matters — platforms like BC Ale Trail are only as good as the effort and engagement of the breweries along for the ride.

Constituent buy-in was a key component of The BC Ale Trail from the very beginning. Conferences, podcast appearances, brewery visits, and tons else were all core activities that all paid off. But while that’s great for getting breweries onto the platform, the BC Ale Trail team needed a way to maintain that momentum and encourage further engagement. 

That’s where two core elements of Tourismo came in: in-depth analytics and automated updates.

Again, we get it — requesting that brewers turn into data-experts is a BIG ask. Breweries on The BC Ale Trail platform can easily access their reporting and analytics in just a few clicks in Tourismo, but any beverage sector pro will tell you that that engagement will be sporadic at best. 

Enter automated updates. To give constituents a clear view of the benefits of joining the BC Ale Trail, breweries received automated updates showcasing key metrics specifically related to platform activities. 

With minimal setup required from the BC Ale Trail, the result was a “hands-off” engagement tactic that significantly increased constituent buy-in — all while motivating breweries to engage and experiment with Tourismo tools to solidify their status as a destination along the Ale Trail.
In-platform constituent engagement skyrocketed, brewery profile quality increased, and many, many more beers were poured across the board.


The pairing of Tourismo with the BC Ale Trail is a textbook example of how building an incredible audience only gets you so far. 

By deepening their ability to collaborate with breweries at scale and retaining the attention of first and returning brew lovers alike, Tourismo and the BC Craft Brewers Guild tapped into a satisfying solution at every level. 

Elevating a brewery to “destination status” takes a lot of talent and a lot of time. And while neither the BC Ale Trail or Tourismo can help breweries with that talent part, the right tools can radically reduce the time needed to reach that legendary status.
